Compare the2026 Genesis G70VS 2026 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Genesis G70 are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

The G70 has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The 2 Series Gran Coupe doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

The G70 has standard whiplash protection, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the whiplash protection system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The 2 Series Gran Coupe doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the G70 has standard Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist and automatically engage the brakes. BMW charges extra for Cross Traffic Warning on the 2 Series Gran Coupe.

Both the G70 and the 2 Series Gran Coupe have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, driver alert monitors, available all wheel drive and around view monitors.

The G70 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The 2 Series Gran Coupe’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 10,000 miles sooner.

Genesis’ powertrain warranty covers the G70 6 years and 50,000 miles longer than BMW covers the 2 Series Gran Coupe. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the 2 Series Gran Coupe ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the G70 second among compact premium cars in their 2025 Initial Quality Study. The 2 Series Gran Coupe isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are better in initial quality than BMW vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis above average in initial quality. With 13 more problems per 100 vehicles, BMW is rated below average.

The G70 2.5T’s standard 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder produces 59 more horsepower (300 vs. 241) and 16 lbs.-ft. more torque (311 vs. 295) than the 228 Gran Coupe’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The G70 2.5T’s 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder produces 16 lbs.-ft. more torque (311 vs. 295) than the M235’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The G70 3.3T’s standard 3.3 turbo V6 produces 53 more horsepower (365 vs. 312) and 81 lbs.-ft. more torque (376 vs. 295) than the M235’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

The G70 has 2.9 gallons more fuel capacity than the 2 Series Gran Coupe (15.8 vs. 12.9 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

An eight-speed automatic is standard on the Genesis G70, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a seven-speed automatic is available for the 2 Series Gran Coupe.

For better traction and acceleration, the G70 has larger rear tires than the 2 Series Gran Coupe (255/35R19 vs. 225/45R18). The G70’s rear tires are larger than the largest rear tires available on the 2 Series Gran Coupe (255/35R19 vs. 235/40R19).

The G70’s 225/40R19 front and 255/35R19 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series front and 35 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the 2 Series Gran Coupe’s standard 45 series tires. The G70’s tires are lower profile than the M235’s optional 40 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the G70 has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the 2 Series Gran Coupe.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the G70’s wheelbase is 6.5 inches longer than on the 2 Series Gran Coupe (111.6 inches vs. 105.1 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the G70 is 1.4 inches wider in the front and 1.7 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the 2 Series Gran Coupe.

The G70’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (51% to 49%) than the 2 Series Gran Coupe’s (58% to 42%). This gives the G70 more stable handling and braking.

The G70 handles at .95 G’s, while the M235 pulls only .94 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

For better maneuverability, the G70’s turning circle is 2.1 feet tighter than the 2 Series Gran Coupe’s (36.3 feet vs. 38.4 feet). The G70 AWD’s turning circle is .7 feet tighter than the 2 Series Gran Coupe’s (37.7 feet vs. 38.4 feet).

The front grille of the G70 uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The 2 Series Gran Coupe doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The G70 has 4.9 cubic feet more passenger volume than the 2 Series Gran Coupe (95.9 vs. 91).

The G70 has 1.2 inches more front legroom, .8 inches more front shoulder room, 2.4 inches more rear headroom, .4 inches more rear legroom and 1.5 inches more rear shoulder room than the 2 Series Gran Coupe.

The engine in the G70 is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the 2 Series Gran Coupe. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

The 2 Series Gran Coupe’s cornering lamps activate a lamp on the front corner when the turn signal is activated. The G70 3.3T Elite/Prestige/Sport’s standard adaptive cornering lights turn the actual headlight unit up to several degrees, depending on steering wheel angle and vehicle speed. This lights a significant distance into corners at any speed.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the G70 has standard extendable sun visors. The 2 Series Gran Coupe doesn’t offer extendable visors.

Both the G70 and the 2 Series Gran Coupe have standard heated front seats. The G70 Prestige/Sport also has standard heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the 2 Series Gran Coupe.

Standard air-conditioned seats in the G70 Prestige keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The 2 Series Gran Coupe doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

The Genesis G70 has a standard Homelink wireless remote control system for garage door operation and device management, conveniently located on the rear view mirror. Homelink® eliminates the need for separate garage door openers and associated risks of losing, breaking, or having dead batteries. BMW charges extra for Homelink® on the 2 Series Gran Coupe.

The G70 was chosen as a Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” for 2019. The 2 Series Gran Coupe has never been chosen by Car and Driver in their “10Best” issue.
