Safety

Both the Electrified G80 and EQS have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Electrified G80 has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The EQS’ child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the Electrified G80 are reminded to check the back seat when a sensor determines the back seat is occupied. The EQS doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, Full-Time Four-Wheel Drive is standard on the Electrified G80. But it costs extra on the EQS.

Both the Electrified G80 and the EQS have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, front seat center airbag, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

The Genesis Electrified G80 has achieved the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) highest rating of “Top Safety Pick Plus” for the 2024 model year. This distinction is based on its exceptional performance in IIHS’ rigorous battery of safety tests. Specifically, it earned a “Good” rating in the latest, more stringent moderate overlap front crash test, a “Good” result in the updated side impact test, and an “Acceptable” score in the revised pedestrian crash prevention test. The EQS has not yet been evaluated by the IIHS for 2024.

Warranty

The Electrified G80 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The EQS’ 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 10,000 miles sooner.

Genesis’ powertrain warranty covers the Electrified G80 6 years and 50,000 miles longer than Mercedes covers the EQS. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the EQS ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

The Electrified G80’s corrosion warranty is 2 years longer than the EQS’ (7 vs. 5 years).

Genesis pays for scheduled maintenance on the Electrified G80 for 3 years and 36,000 miles. Genesis will pay for cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Mercedes doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the EQS.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction and acceleration, the Electrified G80 has larger rear tires than the EQS (275/40R19 vs. 255/45R20).

The Electrified G80’s 275/40R19 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the EQS’ standard 45 series tires.

Suspension and Handling

The Electrified G80 handles at .90 G’s, while the EQS 580 4MATIC pulls only .88 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

Chassis

The Genesis Electrified G80 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 450 to 850 pounds less than the Mercedes EQS.

The Electrified G80 is 10.7 inches shorter than the EQS, making the Electrified G80 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Cargo Capacity

With its sedan body style and remote trunk release lockout, the Electrified G80 offers cargo security. The EQS’ hatchback body style defeats cargo security.

Ergonomics

The Electrified G80 has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the car heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the EQS.

The Electrified G80 has a 115-volt a/c outlet, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The EQS doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

Recommendations

The Genesis G80 outsold the Mercedes EQS by 22% during 2024.
