The G90 has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The S90 doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

Both the G90 and the S90 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

The Genesis G90 achieved a “Top Safety Pick” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for the 2025 model year. This recognition was based on its impressive performance in the small overlap frontal crash test, updated moderate overlap front crash test, updated side impact crash test, headlight evaluations, and pedestrian crash prevention testing. The S90 has not yet been fully evaluated by the IIHS for 2025.

The G90 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The S90’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 10,000 miles sooner.

Genesis’ powertrain warranty covers the G90 6 years and 50,000 miles longer than Volvo covers the S90. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the S90 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the G90’s reliability 15 points higher than the S90.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are better in initial quality than Volvo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis above average in initial quality. With 58 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volvo is rated below average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than Volvo With 45 fewer problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, J.D. Power ranks Genesis higher than Volvo.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2025 Auto Issue reports that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than Volvo vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Genesis 1 place higher in reliability than Volvo.

The G90 3.5T’s standard 3.5 turbo V6 produces 80 more horsepower (375 vs. 295) and 81 lbs.-ft. more torque (391 vs. 310) than the S90 B6’s standard 2.0 turbo/supercharged 4-cylinder hybrid.

As tested in Car and Driver the G90 3.5T e-SC 3.5 turbo/supercharged V6 hybrid is faster than the S90 B6:

Both the G90 and the S90 have a standard automatic start/stop engine feature to stop unnecessary fuel waste and pollution at stoplights and heavy traffic. All G90s have a standard disable switch for the system, so a driver can keep the engine from shutting off when the vehicle stops temporarily. The S90 T8 doesn’t offer a way to disable start/stop.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Genesis G90 uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended for maximum performance). The S90 requires premium, which can cost on average about 84.9 cents more per gallon.

The G90 has 3.4 gallons more fuel capacity than the S90 (19.3 vs. 15.9 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

For better stopping power the G90’s brake rotors are larger than those on the S90:

For better traction and acceleration, the G90 has larger rear tires than the S90 (275/40R20 vs. 255/35R20).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the G90 3.5T has standard 20-inch wheels. Smaller 19-inch wheels are standard on the S90. The G90 3.5T e-SC’s 21-inch wheels are larger than the 20-inch wheels optional on the S90.

The front and rear suspension of the G90 uses coil springs for better ride, handling and control than the S90, which uses transverse leafs springs in the rear. Coil springs compress more progressively and offer more suspension travel for a smoother ride with less bottoming out.

The G90 3.5T has a standard automatic load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The S90 doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the G90’s wheelbase is 4.7 inches longer than on the S90 (125.2 inches vs. 120.5 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the G90 is 1.5 inches wider in the front and 1.7 inches wider in the rear than on the S90.

For better maneuverability, the G90 3.5T e-SC’s turning circle is 1.6 feet tighter than the S90’s (37.1 feet vs. 38.7 feet).

The design of the Genesis G90 amounts to more than styling. The G90 has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .27 Cd. That is lower than the S90 (.28 to .33) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the G90 get better fuel mileage.

The front grille of the G90 uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The S90 doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The G90 uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The S90 doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the EPA rates the G90 a Large car, while the S90 is rated a Mid-size.

The G90 has 7.2 cubic feet more passenger volume than the S90 (109.2 vs. 102).

The G90 has 1.6 inches more front headroom, .1 inches more front legroom, .1 inches more front hip room, 1.6 inches more front shoulder room, .2 inches more rear headroom, .1 inches more rear hip room and 2.5 inches more rear shoulder room than the S90.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the G90 3.5T e-SC’s rear seats recline. The S90’s rear seats don’t recline.

The engine in the G90 is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the S90. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

The G90’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel and glides the driver’s seat back, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The S90 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the G90 has standard extendable sun visors. The S90 doesn’t offer extendable visors.

The G90 has standard massaging front seats. Massaging front seats cost extra on the S90, and are only available on the S90 Ultra. The G90 3.5T e-SC also has standard massaging rear seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging rear seats aren’t available in the S90.

Both the Genesis G90 and the Volvo S90 have a standard Qi wireless phone charging system in the front seat. To easily keep personal devices charged in the rear seat, without cables tangling and wearing out, the G90 3.5T e-SC also has a standard wireless charging system in the rear seat. The S90 does not.

The G90’s Smart Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Remote Smart Parking Assist will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The S90 doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

The G90 will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the G90 will retain 42.39% to 42.41% of its original price after five years, while the S90 only retains 37.25% to 38.76%.
